Leadership 11 Seminar #4 Assignment DUE: 8:30am Thurs. Dec.11th, 2014 ***YOUR HOMEWORK MUST BE A BLOG POST ON YOUR WEEBLY SO THAT I CAN COMMENT AND IDENTIFY THE TIMESTAMP OF WHEN IT WAS COMPLETED*** 1) Read below and summarize the “Concept of Self-Leadership” by finishing the following sentences: a) My understanding is that self-leadership is… b) I believe that self-leadership provides a solid foundation for leading others because… Concept of Self-Leadership: (Excerpts from the National Outdoor Leadership School Leadership Educator Notebook p.98-99) - “We define self-leadership as leadership through character and judgement. We say a group member can be a leader by virtue of who they are and how they influence others, not by the position they hold. I believe that how we lead ourselves is a foundation of how we lead others”. - “Morgan Hite calls these [self-leadership tasks] “citizenship skills, membership of society skills, adulthood skills, personal skills”, and thinks they are much of what we teach as leadership”. - “Effective self-leaders achieve a balance between their moral and intellectual virtues. They are technically skilled, but also have good character and sound judgement”. - “Character based leadership is a lifetime endeavor…You can’t buy it. You have to earn it. Personal leadership behaviours are mastered through habitual practice. Aristotle wrote that excellence is not one act, but a habit, a pattern of action that is acquired and done so often it is usually done easily, automatically, and is difficult to break…one of our tasks is to cultivate habits of personal , self or character based leadership…” - “Goleman opens his book (Emotional Intelligence) with a quote from Aristotle and writes that emotional intelligence, “some might call it character…matters immensely for our personal destiny.” Characteristics such as self-motivation and persistence, impulse control and delaying gratifications, empathy and hope underlie emotional intelligence. These are the characteristics that transform the person with average skills into an outstanding performer. ‘It’s the skill set that takes two people with similar cognitive abilities and makes one leader’”. 2) Categorize each of the 15 self-leadership tasks listed below under the 3 headings for you personally: a) Self-leadership tasks I do well without having to think about it too much b) Self-leadership tasks I do, but I have to think about it and it’s not always the first way I react c) Self-leadership tasks I either don’t do or don’t do very well 15 Self-Leadership Tasks: Take responsibility for yourself Take responsibility for your own learning Risk saying what you think Own what you say If it needs doing, do it If you don’t understand, ask Enjoy your surroundings Maintain a sense of humour Help others learn and succeed Be kind Push yourself Admit your mistakes If it is not safe for the group, don’t do it Participate and observe Learn from your experiences 3) Select and post an image/slogan/video/comic/etc? that demonstrates one of the 15 self-leadership tasks i.e. One of Nike’s “Just Do It” advertisements exemplifies the Self-leadership task: “If it needs doing, do it” (that idea is now taken:) 4) Pick and Practice 3 Different Self-leadership Tasks. Go for it. Just do it. Try it out. No holds barred. Give it a go. All of this is saying, I just really want you to try to practice 3 different self-leadership tasks and see how it goes. Step 1: Choose one self-leadership task from the list of 15 and try it within your family context. Step 2: Choose a different self-leadership task from the list of 15 and try it within a classroom or project environment (outside of our Leadership 11). Step 3: Choose another different self-leadership task from the list of 15 and try it within an extra-curricular event i.e. sports, volunteering, other hobbies. This is the most important part. Everything up to this point is understanding the concept. NOW STAND UP, CLOSE YOUR COMPUTER, GET OUT OF THAT CHAIR AND PRACTICE SELF-LEADERSHIP – I DARE YOU!! 5) Aren’t you glad you did that? Now tell me about it. For each task write a paragraph that explains how it went (that’s 3 paragraphs). Was it awesome! Did you look like a superstar? Did your family’s jaws drop? Or was it terrible? You totally messed it up. It backfired? You tried and then snuck away? Tell me sincerely how it went. Be prepared to talk about this honestly in class. * Please note. I have had students in the following scenario before. They wait until very late the night before the assignment is due. They then realize that they are sitting in a chair in front of a computer and they can’t practice these tasks in the real world. So they tell me stories about months past or make things up. Please don’t do that. You won’t learn. And I won’t give you the marks. Make time for this assignment in your life. It will take you the month to do this. ** See the rubric to ensure you are meeting expectations in terms of Timeliness, Completion, Concepts, and Creativity. ***Come to Seminar #4 which has been scheduled for Tues. Dec.16th location TBA. Be willing to share experiences and thoughts with your colleagues. We would like to have a discussion in which students share meaningful experiences from trying out their self-leadership tasks. Which self-leadership task could you try out in L11 class as a fourth challenge?...Best of luck on your quest for self-leadership! |
